Why reuse denim
An incredible six billion pairs of jeans are produced every year and 30% are never worn.
Plus, 20% of the fabric used during production is wasted as scrap. It usually ends up incinerated or in landfills.
Getting the most use out of denim is important because of its high environmental impact during production and throughout its lifecycle. Synthetic dyes and finishing agents make it particularly harmful in the landfill.
How it’s made
We collect denim from the Ridwell community and send it to Portland-based factory Spooltown.
The denim is sorted, then cut into pieces ready to be used again.
Sewers handcraft the pouches, adding colorful zippers salvaged from a local sewing shop.
About the maker
Spooltown is a Portland sewing factory owned by Sara and Abby, who believe social change starts with small decisions.
They say: “We believe in visible, ethical American manufacturing. We believe that people should see the process of making because it's hard. And amazing. And worthwhile. We believe that social change starts with the small decisions, and we're committed to helping build infrastructure for the new economy of makers.”
