Created from your salvaged jeans
An incredible six billion pairs of jeans are produced every year and 30% are never worn.
Plus, 20% of the fabric used during production is wasted as scrap. It usually ends up incinerated or in landfills, but Ridwell members won’t stand for that: You saved more than 7500 pounds in July and they’ve become useful pouches.
Getting the most use out of denim is important because of its high environmental impact during production and throughout its lifecycle. Synthetic dyes and finishing agents make it particularly harmful in the landfill.

The story behind your pouches
Pickup
We collected 7500 pounds of denim in a special pickup, keeping it from adding dyes and chemicals to the landfill, and sent it to Portland-based factory Spooltown.
Production
Spooltown turned your denim into pouches. The colorful zippers were donated by a local sewing shop that closed—Spooltown kept them for a project like this.
Scrap recycling
Once the pouches were finished, Spooltown sent scraps to another Portland company, Looptworks, that will turn them into new fiber to be used again.
Taking the time to do it right

Spooltown is a Portland sewing factory owned by two women, Sara and Dana.
