Americans fill more than 4 billion prescriptions every year, and many of them go home in a small plastic bottle.
Those bottles are usually made of recyclable #5 plastic, but they’re too small for curbside programs to sort, so they get tossed in the trash. Ridwell members have kept more than 200,000 pounds of pill bottles out of the landfill since 2018—60,000+ this year alone.
Did you know a pill bottle can become a pair of sunglasses? Our partner Cocoplum turns them into sunglasses designed to be recycled again and again.
The story behind the goods
Collection
Ridwellers saved 60,000+ pounds of pill bottles this year. We sent hundreds to our partner Claire at Cocoplum.
Production
Claire shredded the plastic into tiny bits that went on to an injection mold to be formed into frame and temple pieces.
Finishing
Lastly, Claire hand-built each pair of frames, adding lenses. Now they’re ready for sunny days and adventures.
CocoplumA second life for pill bottles
Cocoplum started in 2021, when Claire and her family moved from St. Louis to Oakland with a newborn, mid-pandemic. Home nearly all the time, she noticed how much plastic piled up even as they tried to cut back, and decided to make something from it. Now Cocoplum turns recycled pill bottles into sunglasses made to be recycled again and again.
