Every year, more than 11 million tons of textiles end up in US landfills, according to the most recent EPA estimates.
Ridwell members know even “worn out” clothes aren’t really trash. Outerwear is made to go the distance.
This year alone, members kept more than 8,300 pounds of jackets with rips and other imperfections out of the landfill. Our partner ReFleece transformed some of them into this Ridwell-exclusive carryall and wallet.
The story behind the goods
Collection
After a special outerwear pickup, we donated the items that could be worn again to local organizations and sent the rest to ReFleece in Boston.
Prep
ReFleece washed and die-cut each piece to collect all of the usable fabric. Next, they saved the zippers, buttons, and snaps to reuse.
Production
Finally, ReFleece sewed together pieces, creating roomy patchwork bags and compact wallets made to use for years to come.
REFLEECEOn a mission to
zero waste
Husband-and-wife team Sam Palmer and Jennifer Feller met while working at Patagonia. In 2012, they started ReFleece, molding their first tablet cases from old Patagonia fleece in the family basement. Today, brands like Patagonia and Polartec, along with Ridwell members, send ReFleece their worn-out gear, and the team turns it into new goods.
