Skis are built to stand up, with layers of wood, metal, and plastic bonded so tightly that they can’t be pulled apart for recycling.
When they’re retired, most end up in the landfill. While the ski industry works on more recyclable designs, creative makers are reimagining old skis as benches, tables, wine racks, lamps—and these fun earrings.
Ridwell members have kept nearly 1,400 skis and snowboards out of landfills since 2018. Our partner Après Ski Jewelry made these earrings using them as raw materials.
The story behind the goods
Collection
Ridwell members have kept nearly 1,400 skis and snowboards out of landfills. Our partner Heather at Après Ski Jewelry picked some up.
Prep
Heather chose the most interesting sections and cut them into pieces she could shape into earrings, using all the layers of the ski.
Production
With each pair of earrings, Heather honors the ski’s design, maintaining the original colors and pattern. Each pair is unique!
APRES SKI JEWELRYTurning scraps into statement pieces
Colorado native Heather Mullins is an artist, educator, and longtime champion of hands-on learning and sustainability. Through her design business, Relevant ReUse, she builds furniture and more from reused materials, and the small scraps left over were often just right for earrings. Skis were her favorite, and after she moved back to Colorado and started skiing again, Après Ski Jewelry was born.
