About 13 billion cork stoppers are produced around the world every year, and once the wine is poured, too many of them get tossed.
That’s a waste of a renewable material harvested from the bark of cork oak trees. Since 2018, Ridwell members have kept more than 152,000 pounds of corks out of the landfill. That’s over 15 million stoppers!
Did you know cork can be used for lots of other things, too? You can find it in shoes, yoga mats and blocks, sunglasses, toys, and even floor and wall coverings. And some of the corks Ridwell members saved are back on the table, as trays and coasters from our partner Jelinek.
The story behind the goods
Collection
Ridwellers have kept 152+ million pounds of corks out of the landfill. We sent thousands to our partner Jelinek.
Prep
At Jelinek, the corks were ground into tiny granules. Wine stains? No problem. Even the reddest corks make the cut.
Production
Next, the granules were pressed and shaped, made to hold up for years. And the custom design was engraved!
