Information for
Washington County Commissioners have passed local rule changes that will force Ridwell to shut down in unincorporated Washington County as of July 1, 2022. The rule changes will create a new, less comprehensive, optional recycling program for some (but not all) of Ridwell’s categories – provided only by garbage haulers with exclusive monopoly contracts, despite overwhelming opposition from members of the public like you.
On June 21, 2022, after weeks of trying to avoid litigation through discussions with the County, we filed a lawsuit asking a Washington County judge to stop the new rules from going into effect, and allow Ridwell to continue operating. However, on August 1, 2022 a judge refused to grant our request to allow us to operate.
We’re currently evaluating all possible options that may enable us to keep helping our unincorporated Washington County members waste less. In the meantime, we have no choice but to pause all service in unincorporated Washington County immediately in order to comply with the court’s decision. We truly apologize for the inconvenience we know this causes, and we will continue to work to find a way to help you keep recyclable and reusable materials out of the landfill!
How can I help?
If you’re as angry as we are about this and would like to help, let us know! This fight is far from over!

Starting July 1, 2022, batteries should be accepted for recycling by your municipal curbside program. Because Ridwell provides services that are complementary to the curbside services already available in the communities in which we operate, we will no longer be collecting batteries.
-
Place your batteries in your glass recycling bin in a quart-sized, zip-sealed bag unless instructed otherwise by your waste hauler.
